Summer Heat And Your Feet

Its summertime and that means enjoying the outdoor activities you love, such as swimming, hiking and bicycling. The summer months are no time to neglect your foot care, however. In fact, your favorite summer activities can really take a toll on your feet, leading to painful and unsightly foot conditions, such as fungal infections, injuries and blisters. With simple care and proper footwear, it's easy to keep your feet healthy and happy during the summertime heat.

Simple Ways to Keep Feet in Great Shape in the Summertime

Paying extra attention to your feet can go a long way to ensuring you avoid fungal infections or injuries. The American Podiatric Medical Association offers the following tips for keeping your feet healthy in the summertime.

* Avoid walking barefoot
You may be tempted to kick off your shoes in the summertime, but walking barefoot outside increases the risk of injury and infection, such as warts, athlete's foot, or ring worm.

* Wear sunscreen
When applying sunscreen, don't forget about the tops of your feet and ankles. This is a common spot that most people forget about, which leads to consequences later. Remember to reapply.

* Keep your feet clean
Wash your feet with soap and water daily. Dry them thoroughly in order to prevent infection. Good foot hygiene is the best defense against fungal infections.

* Keep toenails healthy
Coupled with good foot hygiene, you can also prevent toenail fungus by alternating your shoes. Keep toenails trimmed straight across to prevent ingrown nails. If you detect toenail discoloration or infection, see your podiatrist right away.

* Wear appropriate shoes
Always wear shower shoes when walking around public pools or locker rooms. To avoid ankle injuries, wear supportive shoes that offer stability for each activity. If your shoes are wet, allow them to dry completely before you wear them again.

* Prevent painful blisters
Sandals and flip flops can lead to irritating blisters when they rub against your bare skin. Use padding or bandages to prevent and reduce friction.

* Treat your feet to a pedicure
Eliminate rough, dead, winter skin and improve the appearance of your toenails with a pedicure. Do it yourself or pamper yourself to a professional one for attractive summer feet you'll be proud to show off. But don't leave nail polish on all summer long. Remove it periodically to allow your nail bed to breathe. Remember not to cut back or trim the cuticle or it provides an entryway where fungus or bacteria can enter the nail root.

The summer months can present a few challenges when it comes to keeping your feet healthy and attractive. Luckily it is easy to keep your feet feeling good and looking great during the heat of the summer. Remember to wear sunscreen and protect your feet from fungus and injuries by wearing proper shoes. And as always, if you are experiencing any type of foot pain or unusual symptoms, contact your Scottsdale podiatrist as soon as possible.

vitamins

Vitamins can help the body to function. Vitamins come from natural sources such as plant and animal materials. With the exception of one of the vitamin K types, vitamins have to come in from external sources because they are not manufactured by the body. So vitamin sources are usually taken into the body by food sources or supplement.

There are two types of vitamins. Vitamins can be fat soluble or water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins are stored by the body in the fatty cells or in the liver. Fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, E, D and K. This way when the body needs them it just uses what's in storage. The body does not expel the fat soluble vitamins so the chance of a build up is possible if they are ingested in excess. Therefore it is important not to build up a large amount of these vitamins, as too much of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can become toxic to a person’s system.

The Federal Drug Administration publishes the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals. These lists of vitamins and minerals will help you decide the proper amounts of certain foods that people need to maintain health. The FDA’s lists will also instruct you about which foods contain what vitamins, so you will know what to eat each day. The FDA also requires that food items have labels that tell what percent of the minimum daily requirement their items ingredients contain. If people look at the labels they can get an idea of how they are doing to ensure they have the daily requirements of the various vitamins. Plus, researching the type and amount of vitamins in fresh fruit, vegetables and other types of food will help you determine whether or not you are getting enough nutrition from the food you eat daily.

We must do a little research and pay closer attention at foods that we eat every day, and the vitamins they might contain. If you do decide that you need a bit of help in the vitamin area of your diet, try taking a basic multivitamin to begin with. You will then know which specific vitamin to add to your daily regimen.
